Public Lands

Federal Land in the West

The following table includes information on the amount of federal land in each state in the U.S. Bureau of the Census western region. In addition, the table presents the national ranking of amount and percentage of federal land in each state and region.

  • Location of Federal Lands: It is hardly news that the overwhelming federal land acreage is located in the western United States. The 13 western states comprise nearly 93% of all the federal land in the nation.
  • Equally, if not more important, is the fact that over half of all the land area of the West region is federal land. Twelve of the 13 western states are in the top 13 states in rank of percentage of federal land acreage. Hawaii, although not among this group, is the fourteenth ranked state in percent of federal land acreage.
