Economic Impact
of Tourism in the West
The following table presents
the latest domestic and international travel expenditures
by state in the U.S. Bureau of the Census western region as
produced by the U.S. Travel Data Center, Washington, D.C.
In addition, it includes current population, per capita tourism
receipts, and rank of per capita receipts.
- While total tourism expenditures
in a state or region are indicative of the magnitude of
the tourism industry, they are not necessarily good indicators
of the degree to which the area is dependent on tourism.
Per capita tourism receipts in states or regions can be
good general indicators of how dependent states or regions
are on tourism. Those with the highest per capita receipts
are assumed to be relatively the most dependent on tourism.
- Clearly, the West is the
most tourism dependent region in the United States. Ten
of the 13 western states are among the 13 most tourism dependent
states in the nation. Nevada and Hawaii are the single most
tourism dependent states in the nation. The importance of
tourism in the West is also evident in employment data.
Nine of the 13 western states are among the top 13 states
in the nation in share of total employment generated by
domestic travel.
