MLK Story
The annual MKL Season of Service honors and advances Dr. King's dream for peaceful and just communities, improving the quality of life for marginalized and unfortunate citizens of our communities through meaningful service engaging all sectors. Anchorage conducted its 8ty MKL Day of Service Project on January 21st from 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m. at the Spenard Community Center with an innovative youth mentoring project - 50 bikes, 50 kids. In partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage parks and Recreation, Corporation for National & community Service,a nd the King Career Center the service project recognized under-resource Anchorage youth who may not have otherwise received recognition for performing outstanding service in their community. The criteria for the nomination was based on the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness. Hundreds of Anchorage volunteers worked beside the youth recipients to build the bikes while learning, about bike safety, care and maintenance. Thanks to all the generous contributions for TREK Bicycles, the Anchorage Bicycle Shop, Bryne Family, Hotel Alyeska and other local businesses this year's event was a great success.
AmeriCorps New Member and Supervisor Training
January 28th - January 31st Rural CAP held new member training at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska. During this week, Rural CAP members had in-depth training that focused on member development, grantee management, and member support.
Also during the week, ASCSC held their Site-Supervisor training, AmeriCorps Site-Supervisor and Staff from Nine Star and SAFA focused on CNCS guidelines and member retention.

On Friday, February 1, 2007, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell; Mac Carter, Chairman of ASCSC (Alaska State Community Service Commission); Nita Madsen, Director of ASCSC and Key Note speaker; Geroge Cannelos, Federal Co-Chair of the Denali Commission, conducted a Graduation and Oath of Service Ceremony honoring AmeriCorps members for their pledge of "Getting Things Done."
The luncheon ceremony took place at the Egan Convention Center from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. The ceremony celebrated AmericCorps Members who have completed their term of national service work in Alaska and swears in new AmerCorps Members as they commit themselves to a year of service.
Learn and Serve Choice Program
As part of their service learning project a group of freshmen produce a radio PSA announcement that is part of the Beyond School program at CHOICE (a program designed for "at-risk" students) at Juneau Douglas High School.
Community volunteers came to the high school to teach a "hands-on life skill." Once a week, two small groups of 6 or 7 students and the volunteers come together to create new products which serves some element of the community. Great Job CHOICE!
