Young Alaskans are Eager to Work or Volunteer!

The Youth Job & Volunteer Opportunity Fair is April 10, 2013. This event will be at the Muldoon Job Center at 1250 Muldoon Road. The hours are noon to 4:00 p.m.

The fair will focus on employment, training, apprenticeship, volunteer and internship opportunities.

What is AmeriCorps Week?

AmeriCorps Week is a time to salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their service, thank AmeriCorps community partners, and communicate AmeriCorps impact on communities and on the lives of those who serve.

When is AmeriCorps Week?

AmeriCorps Week will take place March 9-17, 2013. AmeriCorps Works, is the theme of AmeriCorps Week 2013. It is the time AmeriCorps members and programs communicate the value and effectiveness of AmeriCorps and the triple bottom line return on investment -- for the recipients of service, the people who serve, and the larger community and nation.

Summer VISTA Opportunity!!!

If you are interested in hosting Summer VISTAs, please complete the attached Application and return it via email to ak@cns.gov no later than March 15. This is a great way to get more people involved in service as well as engage local students that may be looking for summer work!

Alaska’s First Lady’s Volunteer of the Year Awards 2013

The First Lady invites all Alaskans to help recognize their fellow citizens who have shown extraordinary volunteer service and made a positive impact on their community by nominating them for the awards.

Nominations are due by March 1, 2013. Information and nomination forms are available on the Governor’s website at volunteerawards.alaska.gov. Forms are also available at the Governor’s offices in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

The 2013 AmeriCorps Grant Application National Direct Initial Consultation Form is now available.

Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute Begins 16th Year

Middle and high school students in grades 8-12 are invited to apply to attend next Spring's Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute training, March 11-15, 2013 at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center in Anchorage.

Alaska PYLI (www.pyli.org) is sponsored by Prudential and part of the national Spirit of Community Initiative (www.spirit.prudential.com) and is offered to develop the creative leadership of all young people to be successful in school, higher education, careers, community and life.

Alaska PYLI is entering its 16th year in partnership with Friends of Alaska PYLI, Alaska Salvation Army, UAA TRIO Programs, and Prudential Jack White Vista Real Estate. Deadline for student applications and $100 registration fee is February 28.

Martin Luther King Day

Are you looking for a way to volunteer and make a difference on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service?

Serve Alaska is excited to support United Way of Anchorage for this great volunteer event for MLK Day.

United Way is looking for approximately 50 volunteers to work in teams of 4 canvassing the neighborhood around Susitna Elementary School leaving Alaska 2-1-1 door hangars. You can come with a group of friends/family or come on your own and they will pair you up to form a team.

United Way is spreading the word about Alaska 2-1-1 and helping our neighbors connect to services in our community. Susitna Elementary School, one of our 90% by 2020 pilot schools, is the neighborhood that we're focusing on. When families are able to access services they need kids are more likely to thrive in school.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday that is a national day of service, 'a day on – not a day off.' To learn more visit www.mlkday.gov.

9/12/2012. The 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program begins its search for Alaska's top youth volunteers of 2013.

Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. Young volunteers can apply online at the Spirit of Community homepage or at the NASSP homepage.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are currently being offered to "applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities." This program is open to students in middle school and high school. Applicants to this program have a shot at winning $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.. National Honorees have the chance to win an additional $5,000, as well as a $5,000 grant to the charity of their choice.

Know a student who should apply? Young volunteers can apply online at the Spirit of Community homepage or at the NASSP homepage. Applications must be completed by November 6, 2012, and then submitted to a middle or high school principal, Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA, or affiliate of HandsOn Network. Paper versions of the application form are available by calling (877) 525-8491 toll-free.

RSVP 2013 Grant Competition

For more than 40 years, RSVP has delivered proven results and engaged millions of Americans 55+ in national and community service. Last week, Senior Corps opened its 2013 RSVP Competition, which intends to fund RSVP projects that support volunteers 55+ serving in a diverse range of activities that meet specific local and community needs and respond to National Performance Measures.

9/11/2012. September 11th Remembrance

Tuesday, September 11 is the 11th anniversary of the terrorists attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people. On the anniversary, please observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (EDT) to honor those innocent victims.

Volunteer for September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance

In observance of 9/11, Serve Alaska is proud to join the national "I Will" campaign, hosting a free book giveaway for military families on the Joint Elmendorf-Richardson Base in Anchorage. This volunteer opportunity will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 10am-1pm at the Airman's Attic, targeting military families E5 and below. Generous book donations from Senator Lisa Murkowski and First Books make this event supporting our service members possible. Along with books, we will be distributing the Financial Field Manual: The Personal Finance Guide for Military Families, a go-to guide aimed at educating families on how to make important financial decisions and protect their assets.

In order to attend and help volunteer at this event, you must be granted base access to JBER if you are not currently a military member. Serve Alaska VISTA Project

During the next year (2012-2013), Serve Alaska will be conducting a survey of assistance provided by national service to programs and agencies across the state working to alleviate poverty. The project will be executed by Serve Alaska AmeriCorps VISTA member Tenaya Lamon-Anderson. In addition to the survey, regional meetings will be set up in various places to gather further information from communities on how programming can be improved. Goals for this year-long project will be to identify gaps and overlap in services currently provided, as well as identifying what models of programs working with national service are working well and could possibly be replicated in other parts of the state. Findings of a final report will be presented at a State Community Service Commission meeting and will hopefully be a useful tool for them when assessing the national service programs providing assistance in the state.
