Deputy Commissioner Daniel Patrick O'Tierney

Daniel Patrick O’Tierney was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) in June 2012. Mr. O’Tierney is responsible for the three DCCED regulatory and consumer protection divisions that oversee banking and securities, insurance, corporations, business and professional licensing. He also serves as the liaison for matters related to the Regulatory Commission of Alaska and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
Mr. O’Tierney previously served for eight years as Chief Assistant Attorney General with the Alaska Department of Law. During that time, he established and supervised the Attorney General’s Regulatory Affairs and Public Advocacy section advocating on behalf of the public interest in regulated utility matters.

Mr. O’Tierney’s background in commercial law and regulatory policy is broad and deep. He previously served as a Commissioner on the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, and he was formerly Chairman of the Alaska Public Offices Commission. He clerked for the Alaska Supreme Court before being admitted to the Alaska Bar in 1985, and later worked as a lawyer in private practice in Anchorage.  For over a decade, he was the legal columnist for Alaska Business Monthly magazine.

Alaska residents for nearly 40 years, he and his wife, Caren Mathis, have raised three daughters who are presently college students. The entire family resided in County Clare, Ireland on a sabbatical from 1999-2001. A former competitive soccer player, Mr. O’Tierney was selected as the Alaska Youth Soccer Association Coach of the Year in 2004.
