The Legislature passed SB92, “An Act relating to dental hygienists, dentists, dental assistants, dental hygiene, and dentistry,” this past legislative session, and it went into effect August 29, 2012. Two provisions of this legislation immediately impact your Alaska dental licensing:
- Repeal of the dental specialty license (AS 08.36.244) and
- Reinstatement of a lapsed license being shortened from five years to two years (AS 08.36.250).
Existing specialty licenses will remain valid through December 2012. Current specialty license holders must use the new application form to become licensed by January 1, 2013. The form will be available November 30 and will be mailed to all current specialty license holders. Email license@alaska.gov to receive an electronic copy of this application.

The Board of Dental
Examiners is staffed by the Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing. The board consists of six dentists, two dental
hygienists, and one public member. Board members are
appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.
The board
adopts regulations to carry out laws governing the
practice of dentistry and dental hygiene in Alaska.
It makes
final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions
against people who violate licensing laws. The board
meets four times a year and offers a public comment
period at each meeting. Meeting agendas and minutes
are available from the licensing examiner and will
be posted to this website once prepared.
