BULLETIN B 02-15

TO: ALL INSURERS, PRODUCERS, BROKERS, AND SURPLUS LINES BROKERS ISSUING AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE POLICIES IN ALASKA AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES

RE: REQUIREMENT OF PROOF OF MOTOR VEHICLE LIABILITY INSURANCE

A new law, Chapter 60 SLA 2002, (House Bill 4) that went into effect on July 1, 2002 added a new section to a chapter of the Motor Vehicle Code (Title 28). This new section, AS 28.22.019, requires a person to have proof of motor vehicle liability insurance in the person’s immediate possession. "Proof" is defined in the new law to mean "a copy of the insurance policy or certificate of self-insurance that is in effect or a printed card or electronic certification from an insurance company, insurance agent, insurance broker, or surplus lines broker that a policy that complies with AS 28.22.011 is in effect."

All insurers, producers, brokers and surplus lines brokers must be sure that their insureds are provided with adequate documentation to meet the proof of insurance requirements under AS 28.22.019.
