Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange)
What is the Health Insurance Marketplace (i.e. FFE, FFM, Exchange)?
The marketplace is a common platform for insurance companies to market their qualified health insurance plans and compete for business. Federal tax credits and other assistance will be available to individuals and families who qualify. Individuals who qualify for Medicaid will be directed to the Division of Health Care Services.
Where Does Alaska Stand in the Marketplace-Building Process?
The State of Alaska completed a study on health insurance marketplace planning and decided not to run a state marketplace; therefore the federal government is building and will be operating one for Alaska. Applications will be accepted from October 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014, with effective coverage dates on and after January 1, 2014.
The Division of Insurance will continue to regulate insurance offered in Alaska including reviewing and approving products and premium rates offered to Alaska residents and handling consumer complaints.
