About 200 AmeriCorps members serve in urban and rural Alaskan communities addressing four primary areas of community needs: public safety, education, human needs, and environment. The Commission provides technical assistance and grant funding to community-based nonprofit agencies to expand community and volunteer services. AmeriCorps members serve for one year and receive a monthly living allowance and an education award at the end of their term.

Education
AmeriCorps Alaska Literacy Project - AmeriCorps members directly serve Alaskan communities by strengthening the capacity of individual familiesthrough youth and child oriented programs and through family literacy. Each member works with the community’s children, youth, and their families by providing instruction in basic literacy, functional life skills, and computer skills.

Digital Divide To Digital Opportunity Project - This special initiative focuses the combined efforts of AmeriCorps members, Nine Star Enterprises, and community partners to equip and staff eight tech centers in the Mountain View area. AmeriCorps members are assigned to each center to maintain equipment and to instruct in the use of computers and the Internet.  Selected youth will also be given inoperable donated computers to strip and rebuild. Once operable, the computer become theirs to take home.

Connections - AmeriCorps members provide tutoring, mentoring, coaching, volunteer coordination, service-learning, after-school activities and other prevention related training to students from pre-k through twelfth grade. Positions begin in January of 2005.

Addressing Rural Challenges Through Intergenerational Cooperation (ARCTIC) - AmeriCorps members are placed in HeadStart centers and preschool programs to improve the quality and availability of child care programs in their own rural Alaskan communities. Members also teach literacy and basic life skills to parents of young children so that they can help their own children learn.

Environment
Rural Alaska Village Environmental Network (RAVEN) - AmeriCorps members strive to increase the capacity of communities and individuals to improve solid waste, sanitation, and environmental conditions in rural Alaska. Members implement broad based education and environmental projects involving community members and organizations.

Human Needs
Serve Alaska Youth Corps (SAYC) - AmeriCorps members serve as team leaders for disadvantaged youth. Teams accomplish valuable environmental and construction projects statewide. Members provide education and training to youth by taking advantage of the natural lessons each service project provides.

Students In Service Education - The University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Social Work and RurAL CAP together place part-time AmeriCorps members with social service agencies in Alaska to address human needs and improve social conditions through community service.
