Ice Sculpture
Ice Becomes Carved Art
Every winter, premier ice sculptors from around the world gather in Fairbanks to turn Interior Alaska's pristine ice into beautiful works of art, like "The Earring." The ice sculpture won a prize for realism in the 2004 World Ice Championships for Keven Laughlin of Fairbanks and Junichi Nakamura of Hokkaido, Japan. This year, the inaugural Alaska "Fire & Ice" event will add a fur fashion show on March 13 at 3 p.m. to the carving championships, with current and former Alaska pageant winners modeling three dozen of Alaska's finest fur creations from a pure-ice runway. Governor Frank Murkowski is encouraging Alaskans to support the event to help expand Fairbanks' role as an international winter tourism destination.
